I get this question all the time — and honestly, it’s one of my favorites to answer.
Creatine is one of the safest, most researched supplements out there, and most people (especially women) have no idea they should probably be taking it.
So let’s break it down.
What even is creatine?
Think of it like a backup battery for your muscles. When you’re lifting, your body burns through energy fast. Creatine helps your muscles recharge between reps so you can push a little harder, lift a little heavier, and do it more consistently over time.
That’s it. No magic, no mystery.

But won’t it make me bulky?
This is the one I hear most, and the answer is no.
Creatine doesn’t add muscle by itself. It just helps you get more out of the training you’re already doing. If you took creatine and sat on the couch, nothing would happen. It works with your effort — not instead of it.
Your muscles will hold a little extra water, which actually makes them look fuller and perform better. That’s a good thing.
What are the real benefits?
Beyond helping you train harder, creatine has some impressive benefits that don’t get talked about enough:
- You’ll recover faster between sets — less gassing out, more quality reps
- Your strength builds more consistently over time — because you’re getting more out of every session
- Your brain benefits too — research shows creatine can improve memory, focus, and mental sharpness, especially when you’re tired or stressed
- It supports muscle and bone health long-term — something that matters a lot for women as we age
How much should you take?
Somewhere between 3–5 grams a day is the standard recommendation, and that’s enough for most people. Some newer research suggests women may benefit from going up toward 10 grams. You don’t need to do a “loading phase” — just take it consistently every day.
Timing doesn’t matter much. Morning, before your workout, after — whatever you’ll actually remember to do.

Bottom line
Creatine is simple, safe, and it works. If you’re already putting in the effort at the gym, this is one of the few supplements that will actually make that effort count for more.
If you’ve been on the fence, this is your sign to try it.
