Why Most Resolutions Fail (And a Better Way to Set Them)

“They don’t work.”
“People quit by February.”
“It’s a waste of time.”

I disagree.

Any moment where someone pauses and says, “I want to improve my life” is a win. Momentum toward self-improvement always belongs in the win column.

The real problem isn’t resolutions themselves.
It’s how people set them.


Most resolutions are outcome-based:

  • “Lose 10 pounds”
  • “Get in better shape”
  • “Make more money”

None of those are bad goals. In fact, they’re often the right goals.

They’re just incomplete.

An outcome tells me what you want… but not how you’re going to get there.

And when the “how” isn’t defined, people fill the gap with unsustainable behavior:

  • Extreme dieting
  • Overtraining
  • Cutting out everything they enjoy
  • Doing whatever it takes… briefly

That’s how people burn out, rebound, and blame themselves.


This is exactly why we’ve moved away from traditional weight-loss challenges.

Weight loss is an outcome, not a behavior.

When the goal is just a number on the scale, people chase it at any cost… even if the cost is their energy, sanity, or long-term health.

Instead, I want to know: What behaviors, if done consistently, would make this outcome inevitable?

If someone tells me they want to lose 10 pounds, that’s useful information.

But the real work starts when we shift the focus to actions.

For example, losing 10 pounds might look like:

  1. Eating mostly single-ingredient whole foods
  2. Prioritizing protein and fiber (fruits and vegetables)
  3. Eliminating calorie-containing beverages
  4. Walking roughly 7,500 steps per day
  5. Strength training three times per week

In 20 years of coaching, I’ve never met someone who does those things 90% of the time and still struggles with body composition.

Not once.


Salesperson A hits their number by:

  • Over-promising
  • Applying pressure
  • Using sleazy tactics
  • Saying whatever it takes to close

They technically “win”… until refunds pile up, customer complaints roll in, and the company’s reputation takes a hit. Short-term success, long-term damage.

Salesperson B:

  • Shows up
  • Does things the right way
  • Supports their teammates
  • Builds trust with clients

They come up just short of the quota… but leadership trusts them, customers love them, and the foundation is solid.

Which one would you rather build a business around?


Outcomes matter.

But actions are what you control.

When your resolution is only an outcome, you’re tempted to chase it recklessly.
When your resolution is built around daily behaviors, the outcome becomes a byproduct.

So set goals.
Just make sure they answer this question:

If I did these actions consistently, would the outcome I want be unavoidable?
